Kursets målsætning
Genome analysis is an integral element of advanced genetic analysis in any field of biology. Its increasing importance in agriculture is evident from the advances registered during the past decade. Applicability of this key research is a major factor to keep the new generation of researchers abreast and equipped with the latest developments. The course provides an introduction to all this. Considerable emphasis on laboratory practice will be a key element to the assimilation of the course content

Kursusindhold
The course is intended to focus on core and most recent developments in the field of genome analysis through a series of lectures, discussions and intensive hands-on laboratory experiments. The topics covered through lectures and discussions include an introduction to mammalian genome organisation, paternity testing, cytogenetics, linkage mapping, disease genetics and bioinformatics with special emphasis on approaches to close in on the gene of interest, use of gene maps in analysing traits etc. Other topics like ethics and the use of biotechnology will also be covered. The practicals include: DNA cloning and sequencing, PCR diagnostics, paternity testing, hybrid cell analysis, haplotyping, in situ hybridisation, Southern blotting.

Undervisningsform
Mode of education will be English. Lectures will involve discussion and, therefore, a priori reading will be strongly recommended. Group work will be emphasized. Students will be encouraged to present their reports of practical work through seminars. Most recent publications/reviews etc. will be presented by the participants and jointly discussed.

Litteraturhenvisninger
A laboratory manual and selected papers will be handed out at the beginning of the course.
