Kursets målsætning
On successful completion the student will have:
Gained in-depth knowledge of a biological control topic based on the study of scientific literature,
Become familiar with a number of laboratory techniques and participated in planning, carrying out and analysing a biological control related laboratory experiment,
Become conversant with two common methods of communicating research findings at scientific meetings, namely poster presentation and concise written articles called proceedings.

Kursusindhold
Biological control of plant diseases is a fast growing area of plant pathology and it is important that students get the opportunity to work in the laboratory with plant pathogens and the antagonistic microorganisms that regulate them.

There are two main approaches in biological control and aspects of both are available for study in the course. The first approach involves stimulation of the disease controlling activity of natural micro flora on and around the plant. The second approach involves the deliberate application of antagonistic micro organisms to seeds and other plant parts or to the soil etc.

The object of the course is to make an in-depth study of a topic within the field of biological control of plant diseases. The course consists
of an experimental investigation carried out in the laboratory, a study of the relevant scientific literature, preparation of a project report consisting of two parts, a poster and an article written in the form of a proceeding.

Undervisningsform
The topic is selected by the student from a list of subjects announced at the beginning of the course and available on the course home page. This list is based on the research interests of the staff members involved in the course and includes both applied and more fundamental aspects of the two approaches to biological control outlined above. Students form groups of 3-5 and 1 or 2 supervisor(s) are attached to each group. Each group, together with the supervisor(s), prepares a project description and a time plan with deadlines etc. for the work. The experimental part of the course is organised by the supervisor(s)and the group within the framework of the subject. Specific techniques are demonstrated and progress reviewed in tutorials led by the supervisor(s). Each group prepares a report consisting of a proceedings and a poster. Together, these form the basis for the final evaluation.

Litteraturhenvisninger
A few review papers will be handed out. The course is mainly based on the students own literature search relevant for the subject they have chosen.
