By the end of the course the student should be able to handle central problems, theories, methods and tools used in cattle production in different situations and be able to plan and analyse a diversity of cattle productions system. | |||||||||||||||
Kursusindhold | |||||||||||||||
All aspects of dairy and beef cattle production including feeding, housing, reproduction, herd health, management and product quality will be addressed. In the lectures the main focus is on the intensive production system based on Frisian cattle. Attention is also given to the small-scale dairy production systems in developing countries and to the more extensive grazing systems. Within each of these main systems, the background for the recommendations, requirements and practices for calves, heifers, bulls, steers and cows used for milk or meat production or for draft or skin production will be discussed. Many topics are multifaceted and the student will be given the opportunity to examine these interrelationships according to own choice. | |||||||||||||||
Undervisningsform | |||||||||||||||
Eight to 15 weeks of lectures/exercises followed by group work on a chosen subject. The methods will depend on the number of students attending the course. The course will consists of a series of lectures and exercises followed by a project work where the students work in groups if ten or more students attend. Lectures will be substituted by colloquies and the use of guest lectures will be reduced if less than ten students attend. The objectives of the lectures/colloquies and exercises are to give the student knowledge and understanding of cattle production and the different cattle production systems. The objectives of the project work is for the student to obtain skills in using the knowledge from different disciplines and lectures in analysing and synthesising a cattle production system in a holistic framework. The course will include excursions to farms and attendance in meetings concerning research in cattle. | |||||||||||||||
