Course Objectives
The objective of the course is to give the students a thorough understanding and knowledge about the economic forces shaping the conditions and determining the performance of the agricultural sector in a country. After having followed the course, the students will be able to analyse the problems of the agricultural sector. The students will also be able to analyse how different sectoral and general policy interventions influence agriculture and society.

Course Contents
The course is a macroeconomic course dealing with the internal economic problems in the agricultural sector and the interrelationship between the activities in agriculture and the rest of the economy. The problems are analysed by the use of one sector models for agriculture and two sector models (agriculture - industry models). One part of the course deals with descriptive analyses of agriculture showing the economic forces shaping the performance of the agricultural sector. The other part deals with normative analyses showing the impact on different policy interventions on agriculture and society.

The course starts by giving a survey identifying the different agricultural and food problems in different kind of societies. There are different models for closed economies and open economies. Productivity and terms of trade are crucial concepts in analysing the agricultural sector in a growth context. Technological progress of different kinds are analysed. Product development and management skills are other important factors. Agricultural competitiveness is an often used concept in summing up the abilities of the sector. Different concepts and measurements are dealt with. Strategic choices are important in a growing economy where the agricultural sector is undergoing different stages.

The farmers' organisations and the government are forming the framework under which the agricultural production takes place. The public interventions may either be sectoral interventions in the form of agricultural policy or general economic policy which influence the agricultural sector and overall economy. The impact of different policy interventions are analysed e.g. the impact of different price policies. Rural development is considered more and more as an important objective and the course shows how different models explain the location of different activities.

Teaching And Learning Methods
The course is based on independent studies and active participation by the students. After having chosen a topic, each student writes a paper which should be delivered at the end of the course. The teaching topics may vary from year to year, according to the choice of the students.
