| This course is an introductory course in environmental economics, directed towards KVL-students, SLUSE-students and students from other universities. The objective of the course is to examine how economic theory can be applied to environmental problems. Against this background the course will analyse how political and economic interventions can contribute to the solution of pollution problems and to ensure a better utilization of natural resources. | |||||||||||

| The point of departure within environmental economics is that economics and environment are mutual dependent areas that must be analysed coherently. Through economic analyses of environmental problems it is possible to obtain an overview of the intervention methods available to reduce and eliminate harmful exposures. During the course the students will be introduced to a number of themes that will enable them to understand the principles behind environmental economic analysis and to apply the theoretical tools to concrete problems. Economic control instruments for the protection of the environment . Optimal utilization of natural resources . Cost-benefit environmental appraisals . | The lectures will mainly be based on R. K. Turner, D. Pearce and I. Bateman (1994): Environmental Economics: An Elementary Introduction, Harvester Wheatsheaf, New York. In addition supplementary materials will be used and announced on the course website. | |||||||||||
