Course Objectives
To introduce the student to using, handling and maintaining laboratory animals in theory and practice.
The course is a category C course in accordance with the European Council's convention ETS 123 and the Councils Resolution on Education and Training of Persons Working with Laboratory Animals from December 3, 1993.
 
Course Contents
The course includes the following topics: Ethical aspects and legislation, biology and husbandry of laboratory animals, genetics/breeding (incl.transgenic animals), microbiology and disease, design og animal experiments, anaesthesia/analgesia, experimental procedures, alternatives to animal use and analysis of relevant scientific literature.
 
Teaching And Learning Methods
The theory will be given as lectures, while handling and experimental techniques will be practiced on live animals. Institutions using laboratory animals will be visited. Design, evaluation and ethics of animal experiments will be trained during exercises.
