Rammer for undervisningKURSET UDBYDES SIDSTE GANG STUDIEÅRET 2005/2006. The course is given partly at KVL and partly at Alnarp, SLU, Sweden. The period is 24 October - 25 November 2005. There are 40 hours lectures and 45 hours theoretical exercises, half at KVL and half at SLS

Kompetenceområder
Competences obtained within basic science:
Knowledge of basic types of statistical estimation, computation of confidence intervals and statistical tests.
Knowledge of simple differential equations and simple vector and matrix calculations.

Competences obtained within applied science:
Knowledge of how statistical methods are used to
analyse biological data.

Competences obtained within Ethics & Values:
Is aware of how statistics should be used to treat data without undue bias and subjective selection.
 
Kursets målsætning
The students will get some ideas on how statistics is used in planning and analysis of experiments. They should be able to understand simple statistical reasoning in the scientific literature, but they are not expected to able to carry out such analyses independently. The course also gives practical examples relevant in horticulture and some practice in the handling of data using a statistical computer program. In mathematics high school calculus is refreshed and consolidat.
 
Kursusindhold
Basic concepts in probability and statistics:
Descriptive statistics
Point estimation
Hypothesis testing and interval estimation for one sample and two samples
Non-parametric methods
Analysis of variance, regression and correlation
A computer program for the statistical analysis

Mathematics part: Refreshing and consolidating high school calcus including simple differential equations, exponential functions, vector calculations etc.

Lectures on basic concepts with examples from biology Classroom exercises with problem-solving Computer sessions Project work with data from some relevant application area
