Kursets målsætning
The aim is to give the students insight and practical skills in Microbiology at an advanced level. The 15 ECTS block structure will facilitate a project based learning process during which protocol formulation, safety procedures, tools, methodology, data handling and interpretation will be carried out. The course supplements basic courses at the Bachelor level and supports thematic courses at the Masters level. This is the only course that cover Fungal biology.

Kursusindhold
Microbiological topics will be covered by allowing students in groups of 4-6 to formulate projects and design experiments to answer their hypothesis. This will take place throughout the block. Teaching will take the form of lectures and colloquia. The following areas will be covered:
· Lectures on ecology, growth morphology, cell biology, physiology and genetics of bacteria and fungi.
· Detection and genotyping of microorganisms in the context of population structure in natural environments, biodiversity and producers of particular metabolites(immunodetection, marker genes, fluorescence in situ hybridization, PCR, Biolog/PLFA/DGGE or T-RFLP fingerprinting, gas chromatography).
· Growth physiology in terms of nutrition, anoxi, microbial interactions, host infection and primary metabolism(microcolony formation, fluorescent stains, DNA/protein synthesis, gene regulation).
· Microbial activity under stress conditions with special emphasis on the production of extracellular metabolites/enzymes, their biosynthesis, bioactivity and influence on the surrounding environment(fluorometry, HPLC, reporter genes, genomics, transcription analyses, gene regulation):

To be able to give the course at the high level that is intended the more exact course content will be modified according to present research interests of the departments involved.

Undervisningsform
Introductory, plenary lectures and seminars/colloquia Group work (4-6 students) for carry-out of simple research project, including literature search, experimental design including methodology and sampling strategy, data analysis and statistics, presentation of report
