Kompetenceområder
Basic Science:
Knowledge of biology and ecology of main pests and diseases of important tropical and subtropical crop plants.
Knowledge of interactions between plants and plant attacking organisms.

Applied Science:
Knowledge of the concepts of Integrated Pest Management and different control components.
Comprehends the yield effects of plant damage caused by different diseases and pests.
Comprehends the basic principles of prevention and control of insects and diseases.
Apply IPM principles into cropping calendars of new crops and pest and disease complexes.
Make judgments of control requests on the basis of assessed occurrence of diseases and pests.

Ethics and Values:
Is aware of local cultural and economical constraints to management of pests and diseases

Kursets målsætning
1) A thorough knowledge of the biology and ecology of major pests and diseases of tropical and subtropical cropping systems.
2) A detailed understanding of the possibilities of prevention and control of such diseases and pests within a third world frame ranging from self supply to export crops.

Kursusindhold
The course will include:
Biology and ecology of diseases, insects and other pests with emphasis on their establishment /initial infection, growth, survival and dispersal.
Pest and disease complexes of selected staple and fiber crops, fruit and vegetable crops and other export crops.
Methods for monitoring and subsequently assessing the economical risks related to particular diseases and pests
Principal methodologies for prevention and control and more complex strategies with focus on the IPM concept and its practical application.

The different topics will be dealt with in an integrated way with the focus on the particular crop and the pest and disease problems connected. Emphasis will be put on the analysis of the problems, development of understanding, and further development of the setting up of a management plan with steps of action in due respect to local conditions.

Undervisningsform
The teaching is performed by a limited number of lectures. However, theoretical exercises and particularly colloquia which will include presentation of project work in progress are major elements. The project work in groups of 2-3 student will be supported by supervision within both plant pathology and applied entomology but emphasis is put on personal activity of each student. The teachers will give the titles of obligatory student presentations
