Kompetenceområder
1) Basic sciences (understand and manage biological systems):
. A natural science approach is applied, emphasising basic science; the study objects are forests and natural resources.
. Understand the structure, development and variation of ecosystems, as well as causes and effects within such systems. Understand potentials/restrictions and sustainability of utilisation of biological systems.
. Modelling, regulation and management of green resources; develop, quantify and use theoretical and applied models of the productive functions of forests and natural resources - material as well as immaterial.

2) Technology and production (understand and implement economic, dynamic and holistic planning):
. A social science approach is applied; the study object is enterprises/organisations/society.
. Capability of applying economic theory and other economic planning tools for analysing and modelling the welfare and business economic production from forests and natural resources, and of realising management and development tasks within the frames given by society (legislation, regulations, facts).
. Develop long-term strategies, operational objectives and specific plans for sustainable utilisation and protection of forests and other green resources, considering the social, ecological and economic objectives and limitations.
. Knowledge of operations research methods including simulation, optimisation, multiple criteria decision-making methods and geographical information systems in combined short and long-term planning.

3) Ethics and values (understand and handle 'the human dimension'):
. A humanistic and social sciences approach is applied; the study object is people and social systems, in contexts where ethics and values play a major role.
. Understand leadership, negotiation and collaboration within economic planning.
. Understand political and democratic decision processes in actual planning.

Kursets målsætning
This thematic course aims at providing a broad synthesis of three main pillars in the sustainable management of natural resources, owned privately or publicly: economics, ecology and society. Emphasis is on sustainable economic planning taking into account ecological functions and restrictions and the social context of the resource use.

Kursusindhold
As pressures on the natural environment continue to increase the need to ensure the sustainability of natural resources for future generations has never been greater. The sustainable future of natural resources relies upon the integrated management of social, economic, human, biological and physical capital and the careful planning of future resource use. Natural resource managers of the future will need to understand how these different forms of capital interact and harness existing and new techniques to address natural resource issues of the future. We apply landscape and forestry as examples of critical, exchangeable and unique resources and expand to other resources such as e.g., land use, biodiversity, recreation and carbon storage. The course is interdisciplinary. Successful management can only be accomplished by combining the three pillars of sustainability, hence the course presents the state of the art within economic natural resource management.

The course aims at enabling students to:
. Understand and manage a natural resource planning process;
. Use a broad foundation of economic planning and management theory and methods;
. Design and implement surveys of the economical, ecological, social (human resources) attributes of an area-based project;
. Formulate, solve, and evaluate a resource planning model in an economic, ecological and social context;
. Use 'soft' and 'hard' operations research to integrate data and objectives;
. Develop appropriate plans to manage natural resources at a range of scales (public policy level, firm level, local participation).

Undervisningsform
Plenary lectures on topics will be given. Theoretical exercises will support the lectures. Students will present results and daily round-up discussions will summarise. Groups of 3-4 students will prepare a project report within a selected topic, including literature search, modelling approaches, economic analysis and presentation of report. The report should adress the three sustainability pillars. Seminars on selected topics will be arranged. Excursions link theory to practical sustainable forest and nature management.

Litteraturhenvisninger
A collection of articles, lecture notes and other written material will be provided.
