LAS: The student will achieve knowledge about animal experimentation

Competencies within Ethics and values
IM+RP: The student will be aware of ethical concerns related to working with radioactivity.
LAS: The student will be aware of the moral discussion on the use of live animals for research.

Kursets målsætning
The goal is give a broad introduction to theory and practical work within the fields of IM+RP and LAS.

The IM+RP course is accredited by "Statens Institut for Strålehygeine" and graduates from the course will obtain a certificate that allows them to work independently with radioactive isotopes.

The LAS course is accredited by the Ministry of Justice according to Ministerial Order No 1016, §2, which will allow graduates from this course to participate in animal experiments under another persons license.

Kursusindhold
IM+RP: the course includes the following topics:
-Introduction to atomic and nuclear physics, isotopes and radiation
-Decay of isotopes and radioactivity, half life,
-Interaction of radiation with matter
-Introduction to safe laboratory practice
-Counting and statistics
-Health physics
-Radiation safety
-Radiotracer methods
-Nuclear reactions, production, activation
-Medical and biological use of isotopes incl. imaging
-Nuclear physics and life
-Stable isotopes
-Danish legislation concerning work with open radioactive sources

LAS: The course includes the following topics: Ethical, welfare, and legislative aspects of using animals for research; biology, husbandry, genetics, breeding, anaesthesia and analgesia of laboratory animals. Main focus will be on rodents

Undervisningsform
IM+RP: Theory: Self study of literature combined with presentation and discussion of theory during lectures, calculation of exercises and theoretical analysis of problems and cases. Laboratory exercises (incl. approval of reports), followed by oral group presentations of selected laboratory exercises at plenary sessions. The course will be carried out in collaboration with the Radiation Research Department at Risø National Laboratory and one or more laboratoryexercises will take place at Risø. LAS: The theory will be given as lectures and 1 colloquium, while handling and experimental techniques will be practiced on live animals. Some self study of literature must be expected
