Beskrivelse af eksamen: Evaluation of assignments and oral examination based on pre-released questions. The assignments are produced in groups - and one internal mark is given for the assignments alltogether (i.e. all the members of a specific group get the same mark for the assignments). The oral examination is done individually as a test of the student's competence primarily in relation to syllabus and the areas of competence the course will address. Questions are relatively broad and encompassing.

Kursusindhold
Most MSc's in agriculture, natural resource management, landscape architects and related disciplines are employed in places where they have to collaborate across disciplines with representatives from other educations and sectors. Many of these candidates will act in the conflict be it as part of a political decision making process, a public or private management or in relation to an interested, affected and critical general public.

Constructive and rational management of complex and conflict laden problems is one of the key demands to stakeholders in contemporary forest, nature and landscape management - whether taking place in a public or private setting.

The course helps the student to combine, in a balanced way, natural and social scientific knowledge with the more subjective aspects of the problems, e.g. in relation to an interdisciplinary or political decision making process.

The course offers basic tools for analysis and management of the "human dimension" in conflict situations where feelings, personal interests and deeply held values, as well as incomplete knowledge are part of reality.

Management and collaboration skills are developed in order to get a qualified problem solving approach spanning different disciplines and cultures. Active stakeholder participation is introduced as a key element in management. The course covers process facilitation, learning and creativity as integrated elements in problem solving and prevention.

The course introduces a series of concrete analysis and problem solving methods. Through the use of qualitative methods, including interview techniques, the student is trained in uncovering, understanding and structuring knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of different stakeholders.

The course uses concrete, practice related cases from forest, landscape and natural resources and values management from Denmark and abroad. Students get an opportunity to test and combine different, mainly qualitative, methods and approaches and create part of a synthesis between his or hers education (e.g. economics, politics, planning or green spaces management) in a concrete management situation.

Undervisningsform
The course is composed of alternating lectures, exercises and discussions. The lectures give overview of theory, examples of application in practice and make connections between different parts of conflict management. Exercises are made as well as written course assignments where theory and experiences are translated into practical analysis and advice. The course contains typically a workshop with external participants on a relevant topic of current interest (including most often an interview exercise). During the assignments work the students work in groups with a concrete problem case relating typically to forest, natural resource or landscape management. Hereby insight is gained into conditions under which decision making processes are made. The specific content of the course is adapted from year to year based on the composition of students. To a limited extent external specialists and practioners will be used as lecturers and/or workshop participants. In connection with the assignments, students may draw on their experience from earlier work such as bachelor projects, planning reports or theme course reports. The course assignment can also be used as a preliminary study for the Masters thesis.

Course Material: Selected Reading. 2006. Conflict Management.

Fisher and Ury is used as a light and easy introduction to the problem field of the course. Daniels & Walker is a thorough and basic book about understanding, analysing and managing environmental and natural resource conflicts. The course is to a high degree structured according to this book. The book is supplemented by articles and selected chapters from other books in the course material, and maybe by other literature.
