Beskrivelse af eksamen: The project report (group report) is evaluated and the students are examined individually in the report during an oral examination. Articles and patents selected from the journal clubs are included in the oral examination. The student draws one of the articles during the oral examination.

Vægtning: Report and oral examination are weighted equally. The final grade also includes an overall assessment.

Kompetenceområder
Basic Sciences: understand the concepts of combinatorial chemistry, high throughput screening, rational drug design and modeling.
Applied Sciences: understand the steps required in developing a biotechnological product, including knowledge about defining and identifying a commercially inter-esting problem or opportunity and requires knowledge of how research is organ-ized in pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry; competence in reading and understanding patents, finding patent literature in databases and evaluate the state of a patent application; knowledge of typical methods of production,
Ethics and values: knowledge of the legal requirements and ethical issues regarding production, approval of pharmaceutical products or food products, and knowledge of the principles of Intellectual Property Rights.

Kursets målsætning
It is the goal of the course to demonstate to students how a biotechnological product is developed starting with the idea and ending with the marketable product. This chain of development covers many steps including how to select the best project, how to define the product, preclinical or technical development, patenting, defining IPR opportunities, financial aspects, approval etc.

Kursusindhold
The course covers several aspects of developing a product from idea to market.

Basic aspects of biotehcnological opportunities with examples from pharmacutical industry, food production, production of non-food products by fermentation, and production in plants.

Basic patent law, principles of patenting and IPR and use of patent databases.

Regulation, approval of new products, preclinical testing, approval of GMO foods, etc.

Methods of production, upscaling and optimization.

Start-up of companies. Investments. Development of business plans

Undervisningsform
The course is taught through a series of lectures with parallel case studies and journal clubs. Patenting and use of patent literature is also taught in computer exercises. In the final three weeks the students choose a project and describe the different aspects that would need to be considered for developing the idea into a product. The project report should cover biological and technical issues, market analysis, patenting and IPR position, and a plan for the product development.
