Kursusindhold
During 2008 the course is specifically designed to provide landscape architect students with a thorough understanding of biology and techniques in Arboriculture. During 2009 the course will be more specialised in stand management (also for foresters). No other courses at LIFE provide a profound biological understanding as a basis for urban tree or park management, which is the main objective of this course. Focus is on plant properties and plant ecology of particular importance for production and establishment of different plant types (bareroots, containerplants, urban trees of different types and sizes) as well as for the long term development in terms of growth, physical and physiological stability. These subjects are discussed for different environments (more or less open group of trees and stands, solitary landscape trees, urban trees). This knowledge is integrated and trained in relation to diagnosis and management of tree health and longevity.

The following topics will be dealt with: Phenology and dormancy, adaptive traits (frost, drought), growth processes of single organs of the tree related to plant functionality, biomass allocation, architecture, pruning of roots and crown, choice of species, survival, irrigation and fertilisation, growth rate, resistance to drought and salt, damage by fungi and insects, shelter and shadow and aesthetic values.

Undervisningsform
Methods are lectures, excersises, excursions, creation of mind-maps and diagnosis of case-studies within the framework of the project-report. An introduction to mind-maps will be given. Mindmaps are used for current repetition and enhanced learning efficiency. Excursions are organised to the sites of the project report, where the students are introduced to the case-studies. Students must carry out an anonymous self-evaluation of their group work before exam.

Målbeskrivelse
No matter for what purpose you grow trees, a good survival at establishment, good health and longevity as well as high resistance towards stresses and storms are needed. This course improves the quality and economy of tree management in general by providing a solid and scientifically based understanding of arboricultural techniques. Participants will gain skills in forest stand establishment, design of urban tree plantings and diagnosis of health and risk with older trees.

Knowledge is obtained within the fields of phenology, growth and architecture, biomechanic adaptation, compartmentalisation and wound reaction, resistance against biotic and abiotic stress factors, production, types and quality of plant material, biology and techniques by establishment of landscape and forest trees, regulation of tree spacing in relation long term health and stability, the basis of individual and social stability as well as longevity of trees.

Skills: Participants will be able to plan, describe and evaluate the health and safety status of older trees (diagnosis), design and describe the physical and biological demands for tree plantings, and maintain existing plantings through thinnings, crown pruning, soil improvement and water balance.

Competences: Participants are qualified to manage the tree ressource in parks and urban environments with major focus on the interaction between design, technique and biology aiming at a sustained funktionality of the tree ressource.
