Kursusindhold
Management courses at KVL (e.g. Silviculture and Thematic course 1) do not provide a profound biological understanding of the interactions between plant and environment. The latter is the main objective of this course. Focus is on plant properties and plant ecology of particular importance for production and establishment of different plant types (bareroots, containerplants) as well as for the longterm development in terms of growth, physical and physiological stability. These subjects are discussed for different environments (more or less open stands, solitary trees, contrasting climate and soil conditions). The following topics will be dealt with: Phenology and dormancy, adaptive traits (frost, drought), growth processes of single organs of the tree related to plant functionality, biomass allocation, architecture and pruning of roots and crown, interactions with the ecosystem. The course relates to the following functional traits of trees: survival, growth rate and production, resistance, shelter and soil development.

Undervisningsform
The first 1/3 of the course contains lectures, excursions, excersises, self studies and creation of mind-maps. An introduction to mind-maps will be given. Mind-maps are used for visualization and to systematize the obtained knowledge. Thus, mindmaps are used for current repetition and enhanced learning efficiency. Working groups must produce three mind-maps during the course. The last 2/3 of the course will be project group work mixed with lectures and excursions.

Målbeskrivelse
MÅLBESKRIVELSEN ER IKKE ENDELIGT GODKENDT.
The course is directed towards managers of forest stands. Establishment and sustained funktionality in a dynamical climatic and political future, providing high biological and strategic flexibility is central in the course. Focus is on the long term maintenance of health, stability and adaptability of trees as well as diagnosis of the actual state of health/adaptability.

The course will be founded on practical tasks like plant production, establishment, thinning practices etc.

Knowledge is obtained with the fields of growth, tree architecture, biomechanical adaptation, phenology, resistance against biotic and abiotic stress factors, production, types and quality of plant material, biology and techniques by establishment of forest stands, management related to water balance, snow and wind stability, individual versus social stability, as well as social stability of trees.

Skills: Participants will be able to judge the quality of plant material, select suitable plant types and sizes, plan, implement and evaluate establishments, soil preparation methods, weed control, planting techniques, thinning models, stand structures and silvicultural systems in relation to long term health, stability and flexibility. This knowledge is crucial in relation to conversion from plantation management towards nature based management.

Competences: The course will provide future silviculturists, tree managers and applied biologists with a profound applied knowledge about tree biology throughout the trees life-span from germination, over establishment and competitive regulation to natural or anthropogenic degeneration of the tree.

Competences obtained within basic science:
A comprehensive basic knowledge about mechanisms of ecophysiological tree adaptation.

Competences obtained within Applied science:
The students will gain knowledge and train the ability to apply the knowledge to practial tasks related to establishment and maintenance for health and stability of trees.

Competences obtained within Ethics and Values:
Reflections about the responsibilities of tree managers related to safety and sustainability are included in the course.

Subjects of the course are within basic science and technology/production.
