Introduction to macro- and micronutrients, including definitions, classifications, chemical structure, physical and chemical characteristics and physiological function. Digestion, absorption, transport and storage and factors influencing these processes. Interaction with other nutrients and dietary factors. The biochemical role of micronutrients and their importance in relation to both oxidation and antioxidation. Storage, mobilization and metabolism of macronutrients. Regulation of the mobilization of macronutrients in the body at rest and during work/physical activity. Mechanisms to sustain the fluid, energy and macronutrient balance.
Teaching and learning Methods
The course includes one teaching module each week (teaching two mornings from 8-12 and teaching one afternoon from 12-17) with lectures and theoretical exercises. The topics which have been dealt with in the lectures will be used in the theoretical exercises.
Learning Outcome | |||||||||||||
Knowledge: - Describe digestion and absorption of nutrients and factors of importance. - Describe metabolism and regulation of nutrients in normal physiological functions. - Describe mechanisms to sustain fluid, energy, and macronutrient balance. Skills: - Characterize the function of nutrients in physiological functions. - Explain digestion, absorption, and transport of micro- and macronutrients - Differentiate storage, mobilization, and metabolism of micro- and macronutrients. - Analyse factors influencing these processes. - Compare different interrelated nutrients. - Explain the regulation of the mobilization of the macronutrients in the body at rest and during work/physical activity. - Solve nutrition problems related to recommendations/function - Use scientific language to discuss and explain in written English - Reflect on physiological consequences of nutrition deficiency/overload Competences: - Discuss and reflect on the absorption and metabolism of the nutrients and their importance for the normal functions of the human organism.
