Beskrivelse af eksamen: The students will continuously be evaluated individually by their performance during the course. The following skills will be evaluated· Patient care· Ability to take up history and perform clinical examination· Clinical patient evaluation and therapeutic intervention· Client communication and client education · Patient records The ability to communicate and interact in a professional setting with colleagues and clients are monitored continuously. The student will also be evaluated based on their oral presentations in clinical colloquiums and seminars where focus is on patient cases worked up by the student in the clinic.

Rammer for UndervisningClinical teaching for 30 days of 6 hours daily from 8:00-14:30. Students rotate in the Small Animal Hospital Clinic - Internal Medicine and Surgery practice in a 9 week block including introduction and self study periods. Teaching is in Danish.

Kursusindhold
The course is running for 9 weeks. Students rotate in the Small Animal Hospital within the disciplines of Internal Medicine and Surgery. Self-study periods are included in the 9 weeks.During the course the students will be introduced to problem oriented patient approach (POMR) applied in a practical clinical setting, and must use this system in the approach to medical and surgical patients in the clinic. Students examine and treat medical patients with diseases commonly seen in small animal practice under close supervision from teachers (veterinarians and veterinary nurses). Students also carry out vaccination, health examinations and fill in certificates for e.g. travelling. Students are taught about euthanasia and how to handle the owners grief. In surgery the students will under close supervision participate in examination and treatment -including elective operations of patients being admitted for basic (minor) surgical procedures. The students .will train their skills in client contact, client communication and client education in clinical consults where both the animal and the animal owner will be present.
 
Undervisningsform
Teaching of students are based on close interpersonal interaction (teacher-student) in the clinic. Students will be supervised and questioned within the disciplines of medicine and surgery in the clinical setting and in daily rounds where all patient files are discussed and rehearsed. Students also present patients cases in colloquiums with teachers and fellow-students present.
 
Målbeskrivelse
Målbeskrivelse The purpose of this clinical course is:That the student must acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies required to handle, examine and treat patients in small animal medicine and surgery in clinical practice. The course thus relates to the Danish Act of veterinarians (Lov om dyrlæger (Lov nr. 433 af 09/06-2004) §12 stk. 1, pkt. 2).
Knowledge:
·Explain how to address organisation and management of a small animal practice
·Explain health examinations and programmes of health prophylaxis, nutrition of small animals and give basic behavioural advice
·Account for common diseases seen in small animal medicine end surgery
·Monitor patients and take a decision on when to refer a medicine/surgery case to a specialist centre
·Account for common techniques and materials associated with bandaging
·Explain the ethical aspects encountered when working with small animal medicine and surgery - including the consequences of the Danish law on animal welfare
Skills:
·Conduct problem oriented (POMR) patient approach and clinical examination, interpret clinical symptoms and choose appropriate diagnostic tests to reach a final or tentative diagnosis1.

.Choose and motivate a diagnostic approach, a relevant therapy and explain the prognosis for the individual patient4.
.Choose, motivate and interpret clinical and para-clinical tests
·Take out blood, urine and tissues samples and carry out practical tests
·Evaluate patients in relation to anaesthesia and pain relief
·Plan, conduct and monitor standard anaesthetic procedures
·Carry out basic surgical procedures such as neutralisation (castration and ovario-hysterectomi), dental surgery (basic) and chirugia minor (e.g. removal of smaller tumours)
·Evaluate the needs of specific types of acute patients
·Identify and refer a specialist case
·Conduct client education and formulate an epicrisis
·Advise clients about prophylactic procedures associated with specific disease processes (e.g. canine distemper/parvovirus)-
Competencies:
·Synthesise the clinical problems and diagnostic test results identified in a specific patient and herby plan and implement therapy
·Be able to collaborate with colleagues and pet owners in a constructive and positive manner and demonstrate good interpersonal skillsUse professional medical terminology when communicating with colleagues
