Kursusindhold
The course unites planning, design and management of urban woodland resources in Northern and Central Europe, with respect to the following:

- Forestry and urban woodlands
- The spatial composition and architecture of the woodland landscapes
- Woodland and stand types, their structures and dynamics as affected by silviculture
- Nature-Based forest management and Forest Development types as a planning tool
- Soil classification and species choice
- Urban afforestation
- Management planning for urban woodlands in relation to their multiple functionalities.

Undervisningsform
The course is taught as a combination of lectures, group work and excursions. Lectures will be given as a basis for theoretical input. Group work will be based on exercises and project work where students develop further understanding by applying the course themes to specific contexts. The project work is dealing with concrete projects for design and management of existing urban woodland landscapes and stands as well as the creation of new urban woodlands. The project work is resulting in written reports with documentation of analysis work, discussion of concepts and specification of proposals. As both the future work field and the expected students in the course represents a wide range of interests and educational backgrounds, teaching methods in this course will be interactive and active participation of the students in discussions and multidisciplinary group work is expected. Thus students will be able to work interdisciplinary as well as relate their own academic background to related disciplines. The Course is integrated in the Master program in Landscape Architecture. Furthermore the course is part of the 1-year international Master Program in urban Forestry & Urban Greening.

Målbeskrivelse
The main aim of the course is to provide an academic perspective to the Design and Management of urban woodland resources in a North and Central European perspective, and to provide training in the design and Management of Urban Woodland resources focusing on their recreational and environmental functionalities.

After completing the course the students should be able to:

Knowledge:
- Understanding growth conditions and classification: climate, topography, soil (texture, nutrients, water)
- Understanding species requirements in relation to soil and climate
- Understanding forest and stand types, their description and classification
- Understanding stand development as influenced by silviculture
- Understanding design concepts and spatial and architectural composition of urban woodland landscapes

Skills:
- Ability to analyse and discuss the design of urban woodland landscapes
- Ability to analyse stands: stand history, composition, structure, dynamics and successional stage, health condition
- Ability to develop visions and define potentials for urban woodland landscapes and their individual stands in relation to functions (recreation, production, protection)
- Ability to select methods to establish woodlands and to control required stand development

Competences:
- Develop and evaluate design and management of urban woodland landscapes
- Develop and evaluate central management tools and concepts, their scope and values in relation to urban woodland functions
- Develop design and management plans for urban woodlands in respect to defined functions
- Apply and transfer the course theory to related subjects and to different work situations and contexts, e.g. in other countries
- Cooperate effectively in a multidisciplinary and multicultural group within a common project- Work
