LPhD054 Advanced Mathematics for Biology

Details
Responsible DepartmentDepartment of Basic Science and Environment

Course DatesIndividually planned

Course AbstractThe course brings PhD students in life or related sciences to an advanced level in mathematics. It gives a basis for carrying out mathematical modeling and for collaborating with engineers and experts from the mathematical sciences. Topics include advanced calculus, differential equations and modeling principles. Mathematical software is introduced. The curriculum is adjusted to fit the individual student. Part of the course is devoted to a project related to the students main PhD project.

Course Content
Individual study under supervision. The course has two modules:

* Theory
* Project

Depending on the number of students the basic activities in the theory module are individual or group studies under supervision, lectures, seminars and the like. The project module is individually designed for each student.

Topics include advanced calculus, differential equations and modeling principles. Mathematical software is introduced. The curriculum is adjusted to fit the individual student. Part of the course is devoted to a project related to the students main PhD project.

Teaching and learning Methods
Individual study under supervision. The student works out selected problems (usually from the textbook). Meetings will be scheduled on a regular basis, depending on the desired overall period for the course.
