| Kursus resumé | The student is introduced to a number of statistical techniques applied to biological examples. The statistical package SAS is used for analysis of examples, and participants should have access to SAS for their homework. Each participant brings a data set to be analysed; suitable data sets should be of moderate size and moderately complicated from a statistical point of view. The data set and its analysis is the subject of the project report written by each participant. | ||||||||||||

| Basic concepts in frequentist statistics, statistical modelling. Tables of counts, logistic regression. Analysis of variance, linear models, regression. Random effects and repeated measurements. Basic elements of experimental design. SAS and possibly SAS JMP. | |||||||||||||

| Lectures, seminars, theoretical and practical exercises including use of own laptops. Besides this, reading of course material during the course period is to be expected. | |||||||||||||
| Målbeskrivelse | |||||||||||||
| Knowledge: - recognize certain data types, identify and specify appropriate statistical models, and argue for the appropriateness - explain the prerequisities, prospects and limitations of the methods Skills: - formulate relevant problems and choose an appropriate statistical model addressing these problems - carry out the actual analysis (computations). This includes model fitting, model validation and hypothesis testing. - extract relevant estimates, draw conclusions and communicate the results from the analysis - use a statistical software system SAS to carry out the analyses Competences: - independently formulate biological questions - motivated by data of similar types as those presented in the course - and answer them by the use of statistical methods. | |||||||||||||
