Kursusindhold
Lectures, seminars, excursions, practical exercises and project work related to fish parasitology, fish bacteriology, fish virology and fish immunology. Classical and molecular methods will be used.

Undervisningsform
Lectures, seminars, excursions, exercises, project work. Seminars will involve student presentation of scientific papers concerned with fish diseases. Following presentation by one student in agroup other students and teachers discuss objectives, materials and methods, results and discussions. Excursions will adress visits at different fish farm types and fish disease research institutes in Denmark. Exercises will focus on isolation of pathogens and various diagnostic methods. Groups of students (3-5) will select a topic and conduct a project under supervision. However, design and performance will be done by the students.

Målbeskrivelse
The aim of the course is to educate students in processes associated with disease development in fish. Further, control methods and prophylaxis will be integrated as an important part of the course. The course will focus on diseases of fish both in farmed and natural conditions. Following the course students will be able to evaluate diseases of parasitological, bacterial and viral origin. Special attention will be given to control methods involving management and vaccinology (fish immunology).
Knowledge
The candidate will be able to describe problems in basic fish pathology. Refer to principles in fish pathology. Identify the basis for development of fish diseases. Show overview of the range of diseases encountered in aquaculture enterprises and reflect about optimal control and prophylactic methods.

Skills
Apply theories and principles of fish pathology to new areas and problems in new contexts.
Integrate possibilities and limitations of fish pathology in new methodology for solving disease related problems. Mediate and communicate disease problems and their solutions to fellow students, colleagues and non-specialists. Make oral presentations on these subjects.

Competences
Apply principles and techniques for new areas within the fish disease area.
Cooperate diagnostic methods for identification of parasitic, bacterial and viral pathogens.
Expand the applicability of the methods by including theories and methods also for new, complex and un-predictable situations.
Predict health related aspects of fish production systems according to new situations under different abiotic and biotic conditions.
Make ethical considerations of problems in fish disease research. Discuss and reflect on legislative and ethical problems related to fish disease research and disease management in farms.
