The course covers the following topics: - Impact of plant disease on mankind: Plant diseases from a historical perspective. - Introduction to some basic laboratory methods used in plant pathology - A review of causal organisms - Plant diseases from a field perspective. This is a production-oriented exercise (in production areas) where the students will observe disease symptoms and signs, and collect material for subsequent laboratory exercises (microscopy, isolation, PCR identification etc.). - Basic discussion about terminology/philosophy - Career opportunities with local guest lecturers - Perspectives on plant disease management with respect to world trade, global climate change, and the need for sustainable production | |||||||||||||||||||

Målbeskrivelse | |||||||||||||||||||
The objective of the course is to present to the student the science of plant pathology, including the social impact and relevance of the science. A specific objective is to convey to the students different perspectives on plant disease management with respect to international trade, climate change, and sustainable production. This course is an introductory course to the NorPATH Nordic MSc programme and additional goals include development of individual study plans, opportunities for thesis subjects and possible locations for this task, as well as conveying knowledge about the possible career opportunities in plant pathology. After completion of the course the student should be able to: Knowledge: -Identify to the key sources of plant pathological knowledge in the Nordic countries Skills: -Analyse how to approach studying plant diseases -Explain the principals of disease diagnosis and pathogen identification Competences: -Determine where to find important information about plant diseases -Reflect on ethical problems associated with combating plant diseases | |||||||||||||||||||
