LPhD014 Statistical methods for the Biosciences I - SmB I (generic course)

Details
Responsible DepartmentLIFE Graduate School   10 %
Department of Basic Science and Environment   90 %

Course Dates4, (5), 11, and 18 January 2012. We expect the course will run next time in January 2013.

Course AbstractThis course enables the student to identify basic statistical problems in the biosciences and to carry out the appropriate statistical analysis. The student gets hands-on experience in using a statistical package, which is mandatory when doing practical statistical analyses.

Course Content
The student is introduced to the basic statistical techniques applied to biological examples. Topics covered are: Descriptive statistics, data types, elementary probability concepts, statistical distributions, comparison of two samples by parametric and nonparametric methods, t-tests, paired observations, basic design of experiments, basic analysis of frequency data, linear and multiple linear regression and analysis of variance. The statistical package Stata is used for analysis of real applications from the biosciences.

Teaching and learning Methods
Lectures, seminars, exercises including use of computers. The typical arrangement is lectures for the first half of the day and individual coursework with exercises the second half. Participants must bring labtops with STATA 12 installed.

Learning Outcome
This course enables the student to identify basic statistical problems in the biosciences and to carry out the appropriate statistical analysis. The student gets hands-on experience in using a statistical package, which is mandatory when doing practical statistical analyses.

Course Literature
'A Handbook of Statistical Analyses Using Stata, 4th Edition', by Sophia Rabe-Hesketh and Brian Everitt. Publisher: Chapman & Hall/CRC.

Course Material
The participants will receive a 6-month version of Small STATA 12 for free. Participants will receive the software in first part of December and must familiarize themselves with the program prior to the course.
