LPhD015 Statistical methods for the Biosciences II - SmB II (generic course)

Details
Responsible DepartmentLIFE Graduate School   10 %
Department of Basic Science and Environment   90 %

Course Dates25 January plus 1 and 8 February 2012. All days from 9 to 15.30. Presentation of projects: 7 and 8 March 2012. We expect the next edition of the course will run in 2013.

Course AbstractThis course is a follow-up to SmB I, the latter covering the case with a continuous response parameter and no further correlation structure. SmB II seeks to cover other types of statistical problems commonly encountered in biological research such as a binary outcome parameter, and to carry out the appropriate statistical analysis. The student gets hands-on experience in using a statistical package.

Course Content
The student is introduced to a number of statistical techniques applied to biological examples. Topics covered are: analysis of longitudinal data, logistic regression, poisson regression, analysis of censored data. The statistical package Stata is used extensively for analysis of real applications from the biosciences. The course furthermore includes a project period where the student brings a dataset to be analyzed using tools from SmB I and SmB II; suitable datasets should be of moderate size and moderately complicated from a statistical point of view. The dataset and its analysis is then the subject of the project report written by each participant, which is also presented at a seminar.

Teaching and learning Methods
Lectures, seminars, exercises including use of computers. The typical arrangement is lectures for the first half of the day and individual coursework with exercises the second half. The participants will have to bring labtops with Small STATA 12 installed. The participants must have a basic knowledge of the software.

Learning Outcome
This course is a follow-up to SmB I, the latter covering the case with a continuous response parameter and no further correlation structure. SmB II seeks to cover other types of statistical problems commonly encountered in biological research such as a binary outcome parameter, and to carry out the appropriate statistical analysis. The student gets hands-on experience in using a statistical package.

Course Literature
