| Course Content | |||||||
| Course Content Objective /topics of the course: To obtain an insight in the hospitalization of premature infants and the required clinical interventions, in order to secure optimal survival, growth and development. Specifically, the course aims to promoter the learning about potentials and limitations in the use of animal models of premature infants. Specific topics dealt with are: Monitoration of key clinical signs, feeding and growth strategies for preterm infants, ventilator support, temperature regulation, risk factors/complications and their treatment possibilities. Course work load: 6 hours reading, 30 hours practical work (following patients together with hospital staff), including case-studies and discussions in plenum, 6 hours preparing presentation for a selected organ system or a selected clinical problem, including oral presentation, and 8 hours on a written report focusing on the possible development and refinement of animal models and relevant suggestions for further research. A total of 50 hours (2 ECTS). Course description: The student will follow the clinical course of selected premature infant patients together with permanent hospital staff. Plenary discussion/case study on patients of the day and finally a written report. Special prerequisites: Basic knowledge on animal model studies and (preferred) some knowledge on human pediatrics and neonatology. | |||||||
| Teaching and learning Methods | |||||||
| The course is arranged as an internship where the student will follow patients during the week, together with hospital staff. Each patient will be discussed in plenum with guidance/supervision from Professor Gorm Greisen. The student must spend additional time for own literature studies and the written report. | |||||||
| Learning Outcome | |||||||
| The objective of the course is to give the PhD student an introduction to hospitalization of premature infants and complications, in order to improve animal models in neonatology and to discover new relevant research topics within the field. The students will follow admitted neonatal patients together with the permanent hospital staff. Each patient will be discussed at a daily workshop. | |||||||
