Kursus resuméThis course builds on Getting the Right Sample: Classification, Mapping and Sampling of Soils - Module A. Module A provides participants with the theoretical foundation for planning and conducting field studies, while Module B gives participants the practical skills to individually carry out field studies. It is possible to sign up for the course if you have skills similar to Module A.

Deadline for tilmelding1 July 2012

Pointværdi3 (ECTS)
It is possible to obtain ECTS for different editions of the course as the different editions of the course will train the participants in mapping of soils from different parts of the World.

KursustypePh.d.-kursus

Rammer for UndervisningThis is a field course. The course can take place in Denmark or abroad. In 2012, the course takes place at Valdemarskilde Skovdistrikt (Valdemarskilde forest) near Slagelse at Zealand. The participants will be accomodated at a hostel.

UndervisningssprogEngelsk

Begrænset deltagerantal15 (min.12)

Kursusindhold
The participants are trained in soil profile description and soil mapping. The course includes field training in preparing soil maps and exercises that illustrate the variation in soil formation at field and catchment levels.

Tentative program, 2012 edition:
3 September: Introduction, Valdemarskilde Skovdistrikt, tentative mapping, soil profile description.
4 September: Soil profile description, group presentations, auger exercises, development of key for augering.
5 September: Mapping of own sector by augering and excavation of typical soil profiles, EM38 demonstration.
6 September: Mapping of own sector by augering and excavation of typical soil profiles, preparation of soil maps.
7 September: Mapping of own sector by augering and excavation of typical soil profiles, preparation of soil maps, presentation of soil maps to the class.

The participants must expect to participate in group and field work until 9 PM 3-6 September. The course will end at 4 PM 7 September.

The participants will have to spend 2½ day on a course assignment after the course. The deadline for the course assignment will be settled at the course.

Undervisningsform
This is a practical field course. The participants are diveded into groups of 3-4 persons. The groups will work in the field each day of the course. The task of each group will be to make a soil map for a sector of Valdemarskilde (forested and agricultural areas). A typical day will comprise exercises in augering, soil pit excavation and soil profile descriptions. The participants are required to prepare soil maps and soil profile descriptions in the evening, which are to be presented to the class the following day.

Målbeskrivelse
The course provides the participants with the practical skills for planning and
conducting field studies.

After completing this course, the participant will be able to:

. Independently describe and assess the landscape variation of the soil.
. Independently describe and evaluate the internal variability in soil profiles.
. Independently describe and assess the intrinsic variability in soil horizons.
. Independently take representative soil samples.
. Independently produce and interpret soil maps.

in addition, the participant in the 2012-edition will also be able to identify and characterize the most common soil types in Denmark and Northern Europe.

The participants must have knowledge equivalent to MSc level in soil science to participate in this course.

The course is organized in different parts of the World to give the participants practical training in mapping and classification of different soil types (e.g. in Africa, South America or China).

Kursusmateriale
The participants will receive a compendium of selected papers on soil mapping, sampling strategy, soil formation, soil-forming processes, and the geology of Denmark/Northern Europe/Zealand.
