Kursus resuméThe course will seek to provide state of the art knowledge for plantations management, forest management, documentation, genetic selection in one of the most important timber producing regions in the world. The entire chain of production will be studied during the field trip: From propagation of Eucalyptus clones in the plant nursery to pulp mills. Each participant will hand in a written report on a selected topic from the trip. Participants will have to cover all expenses themselves.

Saturday March 24 Departure

Sunday March 25 Arrival Curitiba
We arrive to Curitiba in the state of Parana in the morning and go by bus to Telemaco Borba, close to Klabin. Hotel in Harmonia.

Monday March 26 Visit Klabin and Industrial park
Klabin is one of the most traditional forestry companies and has several modern pulp and paper mills in the south of Brazil. Klabin has 250.000 hectares of forest area in one single block in the heart of Parana. It is a mix of pine, eucalypt and native forest, highly productive and with skilled management and modern machines. We get a presentation of the company and visit the nursery and harvesting areas. In the afternoon we will visit the industrial park supplied with lumber from the Klabin forests. Back to our hotel in Curitiba.

Tuesday March 27 Flight to Vitória ES
Flight to Vitória in Espirito Santos. It was in this state that Aracruz Celulose, today Fibria, started in 1976 and initiated the "eucaluptus revolution". We go by car 300 km north into the state of Bahia, where several of the big pulp producers are located, like Suzano and Veracel. We drive directly to Mucurui, a 4 hour drive from Vitória, where Suzano has the mill, forest department, nursery, etc. No time this day for visits but we will get a good picture of the landscape including agriculture and forestry activities. Hotel in Teixeira de Freitas.

Wednesday March 28 Visit to Suzano Mucurui, Bahia
Suzano is one of the biggest forest companies in Brazil. We visit their nursery and learn about vegetative propagation and genetical improvement. We will also visit the harvesting areas and the mill. Hotel in Teixeira de Freitas.

Thursday March 29 Visit to Aperam ArcelorMittal Bioenergia
We visit the charcoal activities of Aperam Bioenergia (ArcelorMittal) one of the biggest players in stainless steel and a producer of charcoal from eucalyptus. In the evening back to Vitória. Hotel in Vitória.

Friday March 30 Back to Rio
We go to Rio de Janeiro and the Botanic Garden where we have a seminar and follow-up on the visits. In the evening departure to Europe.
 
Undervisningsform
The course will provide the participants with hands on experience via direct observation during visits to production facilities, as well as discussions with locally employed experts. It will be possible to analyse selected topics in detail in the project report.
 
Målbeskrivelse
The course seeks to provide the participants with hands on experience. During the field trip the participants will receive a thorough introduction to the production chain of state of the art plantation forestry. The participants will furthermore get a basic understanding of how international investments can influence the forest sector in emerging economies like Brazil. The course report will provide the participants with a chance to analyze one of the aspects in depth.
